Historic Gardner Homestead

Future Home of the Flint Cemetery Offices

Ozem Gardner, a remarkable figure, played a pivotal role in the Underground Railroad, the clandestine network dedicated to aiding escaped formerly enslaved people on their journey to freedom in the 19th century. Gardner's unwavering commitment to justice and compassion manifested in his courageous efforts to shelter, support, and guide freedom seekers along this perilous path. His home at 8221 Flint Road became a beacon of hope and refuge, symbolizing the resilience of the human spirit against the oppressive forces of slavery. Gardner's contributions to the Underground Railroad stand as a testament to the enduring fight for freedom and equality during a pivotal era in American history.

The Cemetery Board of Trustees and Staff are thrilled about the acquisition of the historic Ozem Gardner property at 8221 Flint Road. This purchase aligns with our long-term strategic plan, envisioning a main building to better serve future families and the community.

The Gardner Homestead, once renovated, will serve as the future office for Flint Cemetery, providing a cost-effective solution for community services and much-needed space for tool and equipment storage.

While this is a long-term project, the Cemetery Board is diligently analyzing all aspects and collaborating with the Flint community and stakeholders to ensure proper funding for the property's desired future.
